In response to the constraints of 2D file systems, AR Desk reimagines the desktop metaphor as a spatial interface on the Apple Vision Pro, using gaze and gesture to organize digital files as tangible objects and enhance spatial memory.
This project received an A+ as part of the Interactive AR Experiences Independent Work Seminar with Parastoo Abtahi in the Spring of 2025.

System Highlights:
Spatial Computing That Feels Grounded
– Folders are reimagined as soft, volumetric domed cylinders that settle onto surfaces with subtle physicality, blending seamlessly into real-world space.
– Inspired by ambient computing, this design minimizes visual clutter while preserving context and clarity.

Familiar Gestures, Reimagined Interactions
– Users label, open, and move files using simple and intuitive hand gestures like pinching mapped to left- and right-hand actions.
– Content is grouped into 5 core categories - Documents, Communication, Browsers, Office, and Memories - to streamline exploration and reduce clutter.

Supports Spatial Memory and Exploration
– A 30-minute within-subjects study with 15 participants compared AR Desk to a traditional desktop using file retrieval and spatial memory tasks.
– While AR lagged slightly in speed, it supported strong spatial recall, suggesting promise for creative, memorable file interactions in spatial computing.
